Dr. Sheela S. Prahalad earned her undergraduate degree from Govt. M.H. College of Home Science and Science, Jabalpur, MP, India. After clearing Pre Medical Test, she entered Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur, MP, India, at the tender age of 16. For most of her schooling, she received Merit scholarship wherein not only was the tuition waived, but she also received a stipend. She did her rotatory internship at Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Bhopal, MP, India. She had just started residency in Internal Medicine at Jabalpur when she got an opportunity to follow her dream and immigrate to the United States. After clearing ECFMG and FLEX, she did an externship at Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. She did her residency in internal medicine at the Wright Center for GME. She was the chief resident and then assistant to the director, Dr. Wright. She was a preceptor for the residents in the outpatient primary care clinic for over five years. Because of her interest in geriatrics with a focus on mind and mobility, she worked part-time at Clark Summit State Hospital, an inpatient psychiatric facility, while establishing a full-time private practice in primary care to serve the community she now called home. Dr. Prahalad has two areas of particular interest. One, she believes food is not just nutrition; food with its antioxidant properties prevents cancer and other illnesses. Two, proper posture with an erect spine helps balance the logical and emotional mind. She is particularly interested in the possibility of neurological events such as dementia, parkinsons, and stroke due to cellphones, iPad, recliners, and couches. She was awarded a silver bowl for exceptional dedication and service to the Wright Center of GME 1988-1990. In 2003 Geisinger Health plan gave her a certificate of excellence for the highest number of Influenza immunizations in Lackawanna county. She has been named ‘Best Physician’ in Abington for eight years, from 2010-2017. In 2011 The NRI Welfare Society Of India awarded her with The Hind Rattan Award (Jewel Of India) for outstanding services, achievements, and contributions, which is bestowed upon only 25-30 recipients per year in the whole Indian Diaspora outside of India. The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, Pa, recognizes her as an Academy Of Clinical Educators member. PA Medical Society nominated her as ‘Top Doctor’ in 2022. Dr. Prahalad is a Pennsylvania Medical Society member and Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1989, valid for life. Board Certified in Geriatric Medicine from 2004-2014. She enjoys traditional Ayurvedic cooking and cultivating an herbal garden in her free time. Because of her immense interest in architecture, she loves traveling and exploring exotic places.
